Sakyong Mipham

A Tibetan Buddhist leader embroiled in scandal, leading a community seeking healing and reform.

Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, born Ösel Rangdrol Mukpo in 1962, is a prominent Tibetan Buddhist teacher and the leader of the Shambhala Buddhist community, a global network of meditation centers. He was enthroned as Sakyong, which translates to “Earth Ruler,” in 1995, following the legacy of his father, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who founded the Shambhala tradition. This lineage combines the teachings of the Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism with a unique set of teachings known as Shambhala Training, aimed at integrating spiritual practice with everyday life.

Under Sakyong Mipham’s leadership, Shambhala expanded significantly, with a focus on creating an enlightened society through the cultivation of bravery, compassion, and wisdom. He has authored several books, including “Turning the Mind into an Ally” and “The Shambhala Principle,” emphasizing the development of inner peace and the application of mindfulness in daily activities.

However, the Shambhala community has been deeply affected by allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of power against Sakyong Mipham, surfacing prominently in 2018. These allegations led to significant upheaval within the community, prompting his temporary step back from leadership roles to allow for investigations and the community’s introspection and healing process. The accusations span a range of misconduct, including abuse of power and sexual assault, contributing to a broader conversation within the Shambhala community and the global Buddhist community about the dynamics of power, accountability, and the path towards healing and reform.

In response to the crisis, Shambhala engaged third-party organizations to investigate the accusations and assess the community’s historical handling of misconduct. This period of scrutiny aligns with the broader #MeToo movement, highlighting issues of sexual misconduct and power abuse within spiritual communities. The community has since undertaken efforts to address these issues, including revising policies on care and conduct, promoting transparency, and fostering a safer environment for practitioners. Discussions around the role of leadership, the structure of spiritual authority, and the integration of traditional teachings with contemporary ethical standards are ongoing as the community seeks to navigate this challenging period.
