It is known for its self-development programs which combine breathing techniques, meditation, and yoga, aimed at reducing stress and fostering a sense of well-being among individuals and communities.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, an Indian spiritual leader, founded the Art of Living Foundation with the vision of creating a stress-free, violence-free society, and the foundation offers a range of programs for children, teenagers, and adults. It’s teachings are centered on the “Sudarshan Kriya,” a unique breathing technique said to harmonically align the body, mind, and emotions. One of their most popular courses, the “Happiness Program,” focuses on these breathing techniques, as well as meditation and yoga, to alleviate stress and enhance emotional and mental clarity. The foundation also provides specialized programs for trauma relief, prisoner rehabilitation, and leadership training.
The foundation also emphasizes service and humanitarian efforts, initiating several projects related to health, education, sustainable development, conflict resolution, and disaster relief, which are carried out in collaboration with governments, educational institutions, and other organizations. One of the notable initiatives of the Art of Living Foundation is its work in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has been involved in mediating conflicts in various parts of the world, including in Colombia, Kashmir, and Iraq with the intention of fostering dialogue, healing trauma, and bridging cultural and religious divides.
Other initiatives of the Art of Living Foundation include educational programs for youth and children, aiming to inculcate values of responsibility, compassion, and non-violence. The foundation operates schools in several countries, providing education with an emphasis on holistic development and ethical living. It also organizes cultural events and festivals that bring together people from various backgrounds to promote diversity, intercultural dialogue, and global unity. In addition, the Art of Living Foundation has been involved in environmental initiatives to promote environmental sustainability and address climate change, including river rejuvenation, tree planting campaigns, and promoting organic farming.
Despite their humanitarian work, the organization has also faced criticisms and allegations of cult-like behavior. Allegations include abusive behaviors by former teachers, such as sleep deprivation, public humiliation, brainwashing, and even physical violence, leading to a detrimental impact on members’ mental and physical well-being. Accusations extend to financial mismanagement, aggressive sales tactics, discriminatory beliefs, and efforts to isolate members from the outside world.
Concern’s about the foundation’s environmental impact have been especially noteworthy, including concerns about the foundation’s organization of the World Culture Festival on the Yamuna Flood plains in 2016. This event led to a substantial fine by the National Green Tribunal for ecological damage, though the foundation disputed the claims and the fine amount was later reduced. Additionally, in 2011, allegations of land encroachment by the foundation were raised, concerning the construction of structures on a tank in Karnataka, leading to governmental scrutiny and legal challenges.
Despite these criticisms, the Art of Living Foundation has garnered a large global following and has had a considerable impact through its various programs and initiatives. Its approach to self-development and societal change, combining ancient spiritual techniques with modern humanitarian efforts, has attracted millions of followers worldwide.
